26 agosto: Ingolstadt – Bad Abbach

Ingolstadt – Bad Abbach (66,3 km)

26 agosto

August 26

We’re back in business. The day is dry and rideable. We leave the hostel at 9:30 but, as usual, don’t manage to actually hit the road before 11:30. If we ignore the usual repeated and continuous stops for tissue-pee-sweateron-sweateroff-pee-thirst-photo-etc., today we’re really flying. Franci is lively as a cricket and hammering away at 18–20 km/h, complaining if we go any slower. I (carrying his bags as well) struggle to keep up, especially after lunch when I dive into Chapter XV of *The Betrothed*, wheezing like a bellows. Even Meri is a bit sore, still feeling the after-effects of yesterday’s “angel flight” in the station—when she slipped on a treacherous plastic cap and landed in a split worthy of Carla Fracci in her golden years. But Ciccio? Nothing. He pulls like a madman, and nothing makes him slow down.

I take a shortcut along the Danube to shave off some distance, but it turns out to be a dirt track that, thanks to yesterday’s rain, has become a swamp in several places. Franci enjoys it like a piglet in its sty (we a bit less so) and comes out brown as a chestnut (not to say something else).

At Weltenburg we hop on a ferry that carries us through the 6 km of the Danube Gorge, a ravine where, quite suddenly, the river wedges itself after more than 100 km of flatlands—finally giving a jolt of life to the landscape, which in recent days had become a bit too farm-country. The cliffs of the gorge are home to rocky outcrops that the guide (for once, also in English) describes as petrified virgins, witches, quarreling brothers. One boulder, no less, takes on the appearance of “Napoleon’s suitcase.”

Towards Bad Abbach – On the ferry through the Danube Gorge

The wretched position I’m holding in the tent, and my longing to lie down properly, convince me there’s not much more to say about today. I’d like to say a few words about the people—couples, families—we keep meeting along the way, sharing more or less the same journey, but I’ll save that for another day.
