Arona, Oleggio Castello, Paruzzaro, Invorio, (quasi) Borgomanero, Gattico, Comignago, Dormelletto, Arona (27.7 km)

Breathless

Uno, due. Destro, sinistro. Diastole, sistole. Inspirare, espirare.

Forse facevo meglio a stare a casa.

Mica dobbiamo arrivare in Cina. Per ora.

Breathless

One, two. Right, left. Diastole, systole. Inhale, exhale. It's a synchronized dance, hand in hand, that I learned at fourteen. I was a rookie scout back then, and until that day, gravity and my sense of direction had always been best friends, two arrows pointing down together. And the mountain, well, it had to be white to really count as a mountain. In other words, I only ever went there to ski.

That day, in Boccioleto, in Valsesia, there was neither snow nor ski lifts. And I had to walk, uphill, with a ridiculously heavy backpack, with no escape from what felt like, at the very least, a grueling ordeal. Not even thirty minutes in, I’d fallen behind, alone, out of energy, and close to tears. Sitting there on the ground, I realized that the solution wasn’t in muscle, but in breathing. One, two. Right, left... The synchronization between step and breath was the key to making the effort bearable, the suffering manageable, and letting my mind drift away and think about other things.

Over time, the rhythm of breath became so ingrained that it kicks in without a second thought. On flat ground, it’s every man for himself, but as soon as I feel the pull of an incline, my steps and breaths align: "Ready? Almost, hold on. Let’s go! Just a sec... OK, I’m set. Alright, here we go!" – Right, left. Inhale, exhale...

I think back to that moment as I’m doubled over, with a thousand stars in my brain and my bike lying abandoned halfway up the climb from Arona to Oleggio Castello. The breathing trick doesn’t work on a bike. And of course, I tell myself, syncing breath with step is one thing, but pedaling needs a different approach. Yet the habit is stronger than I am, and after half an hour, I’m in such a state of hyperventilation that I’m about to keel over, my vision blurs, and the stars explode in my head.

I hear Ciccio passing me, muttering and grumbling as he rides slowly but surely uphill. How he manages to talk while pedaling uphill is beyond me, so much so that I accept it as an act of faith, like witnessing a supernatural event. Meri is already up in the village waiting for us, and five minutes later I set off again, trying my best to control my breathing. As I tackle the last half kilometer, I think to myself that, after all, I’m recovering from a kidney stone (a story in itself, really) and that I have a one-centimeter stone sitting there just above the bladder, growling. And I’m also starving. Maybe I should have just stayed home.

We set off towards Invorio, up another climb, a bit easier than the first. Convincing my breathing not to pay attention to my legs is hard, but I focus on keeping everything out of sync. My legs go "onetwoonetwoonetwoonetwo," while my breath goes "inhale (holdholdholdholdohgodI’mnotgonnamakeit), exhale (ahhhhhohgodthat’sgood), inhale...." I don’t know if this is the right way, but it’s certainly better than before, so I try to work with this new strategy.

In Invorio, Meri and Franci lose themselves in the Christmas market, while I sit down and shamelessly devour my entire stash of food, barely stopping myself from polishing off everyone else’s too, never mind my dear wife and my precious son. Lesson two of the day: don’t skimp on food, and eat something before you start, especially if you had breakfast at 7:30 and didn’t start pedaling until noon.

It’s past two when we get going again, and evening rushes in, eager to spread its wintry cloak over this patch of earth. The bulk of the journey is still ahead, but there’s plenty of downhill, and here, breathing strategies don’t matter – we’re flying.

We skim Borgomanero and head back up towards Gattico, passing through Maggiate. Another climb, short but steep, especially at the start. I refocus on my breath. I take huge gulps of air, holding them in until I’m about to burst, before letting them out. I’m still not sure if it’s the right technique, but once again, I reach the top without collapsing.

After Gattico, it’s all downhill to Arona, passing through Comignago and Dormelletto. Just above Dormelletto, we stop at the only scenic overlook of any interest on this otherwise fairly unremarkable, though pleasant, route. Between the trees, we catch a glimpse of the southern tip of Lake Maggiore, with a picturesque sailboat that looks painted, so still it stands, despite its billowing sails. But anyone like me who’s tried sailing in these parts knows that south of Belgirate, raised sails are about as useful as an umbrella in the desert, or a beach umbrella in Antarctica: hopeful but pointless.

By four, we’re back, just as the evening dampness starts seeping through our clothes. Nearly thirty kilometers in three hours, plus an hour of breaks. It’s an embarrassing pace, especially to anyone who knows the first thing about cycling. But who cares, I say. We’re not trying to reach China. For now.
