Blaubeuren – Ulm (27 km)
22 agosto

All'arrivo il Danubio ci sorprende.

August 22
Today’s stage is, in fact, a mini-stage of just 27 km along the Blau Valley, because we want to stop in Ulm for a little visit of at least one afternoon.
The Blau is a stream that rises right in Blaubeuren, from a spectacular cobalt-blue spring emerging out of a complex karst system that rekindles my cravings from when I used to go caving. From the source, the Blau unrolls through a quiet, bucolic valley all the way to Ulm, one of the most important cities in Baden-Württemberg.

On arrival the Danube surprises us. During our detour along the Blau it somehow put on weight—no idea how—and now greets us like a grown-up river, no longer the wimpy little stream of the first days.
The city is lovely, full of colorful, very crooked houses, little lanes and bridges. But the showstopper is the Gothic cathedral, with two spires 163 meters high, reachable via 768 spiral steps that ultimately make you feel like a screw. Ciccio and I climb up, while Meri leaves us to our fate.

After dinner we migrate toward the youth hostel which, surprise, is outside the city at the top of a treacherous climb—the kind that, had I known, I’d have slept at the station instead. Our first hostel of the holiday is pleasant, although, truth be told, today they should be called middle-age hostels, judging by the clientele divided between families with caravans of kids, almost-retirees, and a few scattered youngsters.
