21 agosto: Riedlingen – Blaubeuren

Riedlingen – Blaubeuren (55,4 km)

21 agosto

August 21st

Having lost all hope of making up for the missing day, we must at least try not to lose any more. And to stay on schedule, today we’ve got a good sixty kilometers ahead to reach Blaubeuren, a little town at the mouth of the Blau valley — the Blau being a cheerful little stream that flows into the Danube at Ulm. The guidebook highly recommends this detour, and of course, we follow it, even though it adds about ten extra kilometers to the ride.

Before leaving, we take a short stroll around Riedlingen, a town clearly obsessed with storks — evident from the many technicolor statues and, more impressively, a real-life stork couple nesting on a chimney. One of them scratches itself and casually gifts Francesco a feather that floats down into the square. Nice touch.

The landscape turns mildly hilly — just enough to make Ciccio start wondering whether this whole cycling thing isn’t just one big elaborate scam. To help him suffer through it, I come up with an idea: I start telling him *The Betrothed* (yes, *those* Promessi Sposi). And so I’m sentenced to forced literary narration while pedaling. On the bright side, it keeps Francesco distracted from the fact that we’re the only heartless parents who’ve made their kid ride fully loaded with panniers like some kind of tiny long-distance courier.

In Blaubeuren, we enjoy a romantic evening at the hotel... featuring a half-kilo beetle in our bathroom. My fearless and stainless wife promptly ejects the intruder (me? I would’ve held my pee and skipped the shower altogether). We wrap up the day at a pizzeria run by a lovely Romanian woman, Eli, who speaks perfect Italian and immediately takes us under her wing. We’re the only customers, and she tells us the place is closing tomorrow because she’s going to the hospital — indefinitely. We don’t know why, but it doesn’t sound like it’ll be a walk in the park.
