Wörth an der Donau – Deggendorf (61.5 km)
28 agosto

August 28
Time flies when you’re having fun. This famous line from an equally famous play fits perfectly—like cheese on macaroni—at half past twelve, when we stop after two hours and thirty kilometers of this next-to-last stage toward Deggendorf, 63 km, before the final push to Passau.
The morning looks threatening and the forecast is even worse, so the sooner we start the better. We split the stage scientifically: first hour, ten-minute break; second hour, a one-hour lunch; third hour, a short ten-minute stop; and fourth hour. At an average of 15 km/h, in five hours we should get there—hopefully not too soaked.
During the first two hours Franci picks up his tirade from yesterday and doesn’t stop for a second. He talks nonstop for two hours and, at half past twelve, declares he hadn’t noticed the time passing. Of course—time flies when you’re having fun… As for me, I’m not sure I can say the same. Today Meri pulled ahead instead of staying behind, but the tactic serves the same purpose: escape from the talking barnacle.

The third hour I impose a press silence. Of course, it doesn’t work, and Franci keeps talking to himself, firing off his stories, but at least I can allow myself not to listen. The fourth hour it’s Manzoni’s turn—he’s nearly at the end by now. And it’s also the rain’s turn, which has been holding, holding, holding… only to break loose right at the end, just before reaching our guesthouse, at the top of a surprise three-kilometer climb.
What else is there to say? Not much. Partly because the scenery is always the same, partly because I don’t have many ideas left. Tomorrow we’ll wring the neck of this second European tour, and then we’ve got a long train ride back to Donaueschingen—to draw the proper conclusions and make plans for the future.
We’ve learned a few things. Hopefully we’ll put them to good use.
