Ulm – Dillingen (58,6 km)
23 agosto
I diari bisogna scriverli quasi in tempo reale.

August 23
Diaries should really be written almost in real time. That’s what I’m thinking now, on September 1st, as I try to fill in the gap of this stage that I left for “better times.” Unfortunately, those better times have gone, and I remember almost nothing of this stage except the start, the finish, and a couple of encounters I already mentioned in the Epilogue on the Danube riders.
Towards Dillingen – snapshot from a forgotten stage
So I’ll let this stage fall straight into oblivion and skip directly to the evening, which I faithfully reported, almost in real time, as follows.
Evening. Where Ciccio’s obsession with lights (or “headlights,” as he calls them) comes from, I’ve never figured out. What is certain is that ever since he was tiny he went nuts whenever he saw them, pointing and shouting “Ta-tan!” During his evening stroller rides, he would go completely bananas at each passing lamppost: “Ta-tan, ta-tan, ta-tan….” And if the moon showed up, he would totally lose it: “Nnnna, ta-tan!” (which meant: The moon, the light).
When he got a bit older, the obsession shifted to car headlights. There’s a whole encyclopedia: angry lights, happy lights, sad lights, and so on. Nowadays, he can recognize the make and model of a car just by its taillights, and most of the time he actually gets it right.
He has a genuine veneration for the lights on his bike, to the point of inventing any excuse just to ride in the evening so he can turn them on.
Tonight he outdid himself. We went into downtown Dillingen for dinner, but none of us felt like riding any more. But what about the headlights? I jokingly suggested he strap them onto himself—and he took me literally. Front light as the bike’s headlamp, rear light with flashing mode clipped to his jacket collar. And so, like a human bicycle, he strolled through town, completely unfazed by people inevitably turning around to stare at this kind of out-of-season walking Christmas tree.

It made me wonder: how might this passion evolve once he’s an adult? The image that popped into my mind was him, at the altar, wearing a suit decked out with high beams, low beams, blinkers, and reflectors. And since he read these lines as I was writing them, I already know he’s going to do it.
